Paths of Light features original compositions that reflect Roland Moses’ personal and musical journey, capturing moments of introspection, joy, and cultural intersection. The album navigates a broad sonic landscape, from vibrant Mbaqanga rhythms to the complexity of Jazz-Fusion, the sophistication of Swing, and the warmth of Latin jazz.
The Paths of Light Quartet breathes new life into these works, with richly layered horn arrangements and compelling improvisational dialogues. The expanded textures allow for a deeper exploration of the themes, emotions, and rhythms that define the original trio recordings.
Sydney Mavundla is an award-winning, internationally recognized musician who bring exceptional artistry and depth to the ensemble. The dynamic horn contributions offer fresh interpretations and vibrant synergy within the group. Roland Moses won the Best Song category at the 2022 Mzantsi Jazz Awards for his composition “African Sun“, featured on his debut album Paths of Light. As part of the award, he received a DVD recording opportunity for his quintet, capturing their dynamic live performance.
